KUCHING: Additional Fire and Rescue Stations throughout the state will improve response time and emergency-preparedness.
Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian said the total number of such facilities in Sarawak was now 39, with the addition of the Kota Sentosa Fire and Rescue Station becoming fully operational on 2 May 2025.
According to him, this number is further supported by 59 volunteer fire stations which play a vital role in strengthening grassroots-level emergency preparedness.
“Kota Sentosa Fire and Rescue Station has a total strength of 28 personnel, comprising 13 Permanent Fire Officers and 15 Auxiliary Firefighters.
“In addition, specialised auxiliary units include 19 officers in the Search and Water Rescue Team (SWART) and 18 in the Mountain and Cave Search and Rescue (MOCSAR) unit,” he explained.
He said this during his ministerial winding-up session at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Tuesday.
The Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government noted that three projects were currently underway to upgrade fire safety infrastructure in the state.
“Among these is the Sungai Asap Fire Station expected to be complete in 2026, with approved funding of RM8.2 million under the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP), Fourth Rolling Plan (RP4).
“Construction of Sungai Asap Fire Station will be carried out by the Public Works Department (JKR) and is currently in the tender process. This project is expected to commence in June 2025 and be completed in 2026.
“Simultaneously, Engkilili and Dalat Fire Station are also expected to be completed by the year 2027, with approved funding of RM15.5 million and RM9.8 million respectively under 12MP RP5,” he said.
This addition will provide Sarawak with a total of 42 Fire Stations by the end of 2027.
Datuk Amar Dr. Sim emphasised that these projects are in the design planning stage.
He said that the proposed designs have been submitted to JKR for finalisation, with the tender advertisement expected to be published in July 2025.
He also informed that the proposal to establish a Fire and Rescue Station in Kabong was still under consideration. -UKASnews
