KUALA LUMPUR: The Sarawak government is confident that the cost of hydrogen production can be reduced to just 10 kilowatt hours per kilogramme (kWh/kg) compared to the current 30 kWh/kg.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said this can be achieved through collaboration with the famous German energy company, Siemens Energy in the Sarawak Government's efforts to produce hydrogen more efficiently and save energy.
“There is potential for this cost to be further reduced. With the ongoing collaboration with Siemens, we are targeting an energy consumption of around 10 kWh per kilogramme of hydrogen.
“What I am saying here is that we are moving towards clean hydrogen,” he said when speaking at the ASEAN Sustainability and Digitalisation Leadership session in conjunction with the ASEAN Women’s Economic Summit (AWES) here on Sunday.
Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari added that through research collaboration with the PETRONAS Research Division and a Japanese company, Sarawak has successfully reduced the energy consumption for hydrogen production from 60 kWh/kg to 30 kWh/kg using new membrane technology.
“This research not only saves energy, but also helps Sarawak to meet environmental, social and governance (ESG) standards,” he explained.
He stressed that the development of this clean energy will be an important contribution of Sarawak and Malaysia towards creating a more sustainable and eco-friendly world.
Earlier, the Premier of Sarawak also visited the AWES 2025 exhibition with other invited guests.
Also present were Malaysia’s Deputy Minister of Economy, Datuk Hanifah Hajar Taib; Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning and Development), Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel; Secretary-General of Investment, Trade and Industry, Dato Hairil Yahri Yaacob; Founder of Women Leadership Foundation, Tan Sri Datin Paduka Siti Sa’diah Sheikh Bakir; AWES 2025 Chairwoman and Founder of Women Leadership Foundation, Datuk (Dr) Hafsah Hashim; OUB Malaysia Chief Executive Officer, Ng Wei Wei and other invited guests.-UKASnews
