SIBURAN: The vibrant celebration of Pesta Sungai Kampung Simpok 2025 made a much-anticipated return, shining a spotlight on the unique cultural traditions of the Bidayuh Bisapug community while strengthening unity among local residents.
Held at the Mini Waterfront of Kampung Simpok, the annual event was officiated on Saturday by Sarawak’s Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, who is also the Tarat Assemblyman, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.
First introduced in 2017 as a symbol of cultural pride and community togetherness, the festival had paused due to the COVID-19 pandemic but was revived in 2022, regaining its role as a cornerstone of communal celebration.
This year’s edition was further enlivened by the presentation of educational incentives to 47 outstanding Bidayuh Bisapug students who achieved excellent results in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examinations.
“The academic success of our children is a testament to the strength and resilience of our community. Festivals such as this go beyond entertainment—they nurture identity and reinforce the drive to progress,” said Dato Sri Roland in his speech.
Kampung Simpok, the largest settlement of the Bidayuh Bisapug community, comprises six zones—Kandis, Serui, Pedat, Regu, Tengah, and Tedontiang.
Each zone took part in various activities throughout the event, including a decorated raft parade that captured the attention of visitors.
Adding to the festivity was the participation of the AirAsia Fun Team, with the airline serving as a key collaborative partner for this year’s event.
The festival also featured an array of local stalls selling handicrafts, traditional foods, and folk games, further establishing Pesta Sungai Simpok as not only a celebration of heritage but also a valuable platform for stimulating the local economy. -UKASnews
