BELAGA: The Ministry of Digital Malaysia has welcomed initiatives aimed at empowering rural communities with critical emergency response skills, recognising their importance in remote areas that often face limited access to first responder services.

Deputy Minister of Digital, Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, expressed his strong support for the Komunitiku Sayang Programme Series 5, held in Uma Badeng, Sungai Koyan, Belaga, which focused on raising awareness and equipping local residents with emergency preparedness—particularly in fire safety and first aid response.

Speaking during the programme’s launch on Saturday, Datuk Wilson, who is also the Member of Parliament for Hulu Rajang, emphasised the relevance of the programme for the interior of Sarawak, citing several fire incidents in Belaga in recent years as reminders of the need for early safety education and preparedness.

“I commend the volunteers who have stepped up to act as first responders during emergencies. Tragedies such as these underscore the importance of equipping our people with knowledge and practical skills in safety and first aid,” he said.

Jointly organised by the Fire and Rescue Department of Malaysia (JBPM) and Bintulu Port Holdings Berhad (BPHB), the two-day programme ran from 9 to 10 May and included hands-on safety training and demonstrations.

Datuk Wilson also highlighted the wider impact of fire disasters, noting that beyond physical losses, victims often face emotional and psychological challenges.

“It is not enough to rebuild infrastructure; we must also strengthen the mental and social resilience of our communities,” he added. “Basic knowledge in first aid, rescue techniques, early fire suppression, and emergency communications is essential and should be widely accessible.”

He further stated that the Ministry of Digital Malaysia sees digital technology as a vital tool in disaster management, urging rural communities like Uma Badeng to take full advantage of emergency mobile applications, early warning systems, and reliable communication networks.

Calling for urgent progress on the construction of the Sungai Asap Fire and Rescue Station, Datuk Wilson stressed the pressing need for such infrastructure to support rural populations effectively.

He also extended his appreciation to BPHB for their collaboration, describing the programme as a shining example of effective public-private partnership in supporting rural development.

JBPM’s continued efforts in providing safety education and training were also acknowledged.

Among those present at the event were Murum Assemblyman Kennedy Chukpai Ugon, BPHB Vice President Daiana Luna Suip, Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department Director YS PKPjB Jamri Masran, JBPM Zone 5 Bintulu Chief PgKB II Wan Kamarudin Wan Ahmad, Belaga District Officer Bidah Lujah, Belaga District Police Chief DSP Jimbai Bala, Uma Badeng community leader PL Nyaban Kulleh, as well as senior officers from BPHB and JBPM, local community heads and leaders. -UKASnews
