KUCHING: Muaythai Kenyalang Club successfully won the TYT Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Cup 2025 which was held at the Kuching Riverbank here on Saturday.
With a haul of 22 gold, 7 silver and 29 bronze medals, the Kuching-based club successfully took home the round cup.
Sting Muaythai Club came in second place with a medal haul of 13 gold, seven silver and 20 bronze which also took home the round cup.
PS Muaythai Bintulu Club came in third place with a haul of 11 gold, 17 bronze and 28 bronze while Phoenix Meranek Club managed to take fourth place with a haul of 9 gold, six silver and 15 bronze.
The prize presentation ceremony for the winners was presented by the Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development of Sarawak, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu, representing the Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development of Sarawak, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.
Also present were the Mayor of Kuching North City Hall (DBKU), Dato Hilmy Othman; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development of Sarawak, Morshidi Frederick; Director of the Sarawak Youth and Sports Department, Lamat Nyalau and President of the Sarawak Muaythai Association, Jumaat Ibrahim.
Meanwhile, Dato Gerald when met by the media said that this tournament is a suitable platform for muaythai athletes out there to showcase their talents in addition to promoting muaythai in the state.
He explained that muaythai sports are growing rapidly in Sarawak, with participation from various parts of the state in the tournament, including participation from other countries.
"We also saw that it's not just in Kuching, there are clubs from Bintulu, Sibu, Miri and Semarahan and so on.
"Everything is there, and this shows that there is a lot of interest in this sport.
"We from the Ministry really like it when there is a large group of athletes, the kids are happy that we can train them and also get the talents to produce athletes to represent Sarawak and the country," he explained.
He also called for the 10th edition of the TYT Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Cup Championship to be brought forward to prepare athletes who will represent Sarawak at the 22nd Malaysia Games (SUKMA) to be held in Selangor.
Meanwhile, Jumaat said that the association has implemented several preparations in an effort to unearth talent throughout Sarawak.
"The Sarawak Muaythai Association is always thinking of ways to unearth local talent, especially young muaythai players.
"We have several plans apart from the TYT Yang di-Pertua Sarawak Cup where we will hold the Borneo Cup, Bintulu Challenge in Miri, Sibu and so on," he explained.
Adding that, this is an effort by the association to maintain the quality of the sport in Sarawak so that it can be on par with other states and even foreign countries.-UKASnews
