BEKENU: The Sarawak Government’s ongoing commitment to bridging the rural development gap took another step forward on Tuesday with the groundbreaking ceremony for the Kampung Bulau Bridge, officiated by Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, at Dewan Kampung Bulau.

The RM6.09 million project is scheduled for completion within 24 months, by February 2027, and forms part of the state’s broader agenda to enhance rural infrastructure and promote equitable development across Sarawak.

According to Datuk Amar Douglas Embas, the project not only aims to improve connectivity and convenience for local residents but also serves as tangible proof that the government stands by its development pledges.

“Our Premier has consistently delivered on promises to bring progress to communities for the benefit of the people,” he said in his address.

“State leaders continue to work tirelessly to bring more projects into rural areas, reinforcing Gabungan Parti Sarawak’s (GPS) vision of serving the people with sincerity and results.”

He further called on the Public Works Department (JKR) and the appointed contractor to carry out their duties with full dedication to ensure the project is completed within the stipulated timeframe.

The new bridge is expected to significantly enhance connectivity between Bekenu and its surrounding areas, with Kampung Bulau strategically located along two key access routes—the Pan Borneo Highway and the Bintulu–Miri Coastal Road.

This positioning is seen as critical in supporting local mobility and boosting economic activity in the area.

During the event, several other approved development initiatives were also highlighted.

These included the upgrading of the coastal road to Sepupok and the development of the Bekenu Waterfront, along with other infrastructure enhancements in Kampung Rambai and neighbouring villages.

These projects were credited to the efforts of Datuk Rosey Yunus, Deputy Minister for Women Early Childhood & Community Wellbeing Development and Bekenu Assemblywoman.

Among those present were Sarawak Public Works Department Director, Adj. Prof. Ir. Ts. Gs. Br. PMr. Dr. Cassidy Morris, Deputy Director of Infrastructure Sector, Ir. Wisil Lichok; and Subis District Officer, Norlila Ulis. -UKASnews
