KUCHING: The Sarawak government's efforts to provide free higher education to all its citizens by 2026 remain steadfast, aligning with its vision to ensure that every Sarawakian has an equal opportunity in life.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg stated that as Sarawak approaches the goal of free higher education by 2026, the government is committed to ensuring that every Sarawakian, regardless of background, has a fair chance to succeed.
"I have always believed that a child from the village deserves the same opportunities as everyone else. Today, we are getting closer to making that belief a reality," he said.
This was conveyed through the text of his speech, read by the Deputy Minister of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, at the 19th Convocation Ceremony of the Sarawak College of Technology (TCS) held at the CIDB Convention Centre on Saturday.
The Sarawak Premier added that expanding access to education is part of a broader effort to shape Sarawak's future as an innovative and globally competitive state.
He explained that the state government's aspiration is to nurture a young generation who are not only job seekers but also capable of creating opportunities, becoming innovators, and serving as ethical leaders.
"We want our youth to be more than job seekers. We want them to be job creators, innovators, and ethical leaders.
"Whether their journey takes them into business, education, public service, or entrepreneurship, each of them plays a vital role in shaping a smarter and more connected Sarawak.
"As our state embraces the global stage through digital trade, green energy, and new technologies, their vision, passion, and goals will help determine where we go next," he said.
Meanwhile, the Sarawak Premier commended TCS for its dedication to breaking the cycle of poverty, particularly among B40 households in Sabah and Sarawak.
To date, he noted, a total of 4,371 graduates have completed their studies at TCS, including 52 students on the Dean's List and 66 First Class Degree graduates.
Additionally, 85 per cent of TCS College students come from the B40 group and benefit from various facilities, including free accommodation and transport for three years of study, as well as a waiver of registration fees each semester.
Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee also witnessed the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between TCS College and the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM).
This collaboration will enable IIUM's Master's degree programmes to be offered in Sarawak, thereby creating more opportunities for professionals, particularly educators, to further their studies without having to relocate outside the state. -UKASnews
