SIBU: The consolidation of Sarawak’s main water supply agencies is set to bring long-term benefits to all staff involved, said Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi.
He gave this assurance while noting that the merger process is now in its final stages.
Dato Sri Julaihi added that the launch of the new entity is expected to be officially announced by the Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, this coming June.
"If there are still concerns about the impact of this consolidation, there is no need to worry. We know what is best for everyone.
"Staff welfare will continue to be prioritised, with improvements to salaries, pensions, and EPF contributions currently being finalised. Further details will be shared during an upcoming town hall session on this matter," he said.
He was speaking at the Sibu Water Board (SWB) 2025 Annual Dinner and Hari Raya Aidilfitri Gathering held at a hotel here on Friday.
The three entities involved in the merger are the Kuching Water Board (KWB), the Sibu Water Board (SWB), and Sarawak Water Sdn Bhd, formerly known as Lembaga Air Kawasan Utara (LAKU).
Meanwhile, the Rural Water Supply Department (JBALB) is not part of the consolidation at this stage.
Dato Sri Julaihi also revealed that the Sarawak Government has approved an allocation of RM697 million to implement 30 projects under the Twelfth Malaysia Plan (12MP) within the Sibu Water Board’s jurisdiction.
“To date, eight projects have been completed at 26 per cent progress, while 11 projects, currently underway, have reached 37 per cent completion according to schedule, with the remaining 11 still in the planning phase.
"Among the key projects in progress are the upgrading of the Salim Water Treatment Plant and the replacement and upgrading of ageing pipelines across Sibu Division, at a total cost of RM338 million," he said.
