MUKAH: The Sarawak Government remains committed not only to advancing the economic development of its people but also to supporting initiatives that preserve the state’s rich cultural heritage.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, said that under the 'Sarawak Maju Makmur' (Progressive and Prosperous Sarawak) policy, the state’s inclusive, sustainable and people-centred development continues to be strengthened without neglecting the cultural values that form the backbone of community unity.
He noted that as a state blessed with diverse cultures, natural heritage, and a unique historical background, the Sarawak Government consistently strives to empower the tourism industry as one of the main drivers of the state's economy.
"Among the key initiatives that have been implemented or are currently underway include the Empowerment of Community-Based Tourism, which offers rural communities, particularly indigenous groups, the opportunity to become part of the tourism ecosystem through homestays, handicrafts, traditional food, and local cultural experiences.
"Additionally, investments have been made in tourism infrastructure, including upgrading facilities at major destinations such as national parks, beaches, and longhouses, alongside waterfront projects previously mentioned.
"These are development initiatives that will elevate these places to even greater heights," he said.
The speech was delivered on his behalf by the Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, at the official launch of Kaul Mukah 2025, held at the Kala Dana Beach Kaul Festival site on Saturday.
To further stimulate the state’s tourism sector, the Sarawak Government, through the Ministry of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP), is actively organising a range of iconic events to attract visitors to the state.
According to Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari, among the flagship events are the internationally acclaimed Rainforest World Music Festival (RWMF), the Borneo Jazz Festival, and the What About Kuching (WAK) festival, all of which have successfully elevated Sarawak’s profile as a culturally rich tourism destination on the global stage.
He added that emphasis is also placed on the development of human capital within the tourism sector, including training and certification programmes for tour guides, homestay operators, and local entrepreneurs, ensuring they are well-equipped to compete and provide the best possible experience to visitors.
"We firmly believe that tourism not only generates income and employment but also serves as a vital platform for strengthening unity, preserving heritage, and showcasing the uniqueness of Sarawak to the world," he said.
Among those present at the event were the Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah, Deputy Minister of Economy and Member of Parliament for Mukah, Dato Hanifah Hajar Taib, Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Integrity and Ombudsman), Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya, Member of Parliament for Igan, Ahmad Johnie Zawawi, Tellian Assemblyman, Royston Valentine, Daro Assemblyman, Safiee Ahmad, Jepak Assemblyman, Iskandar Turkee; Mukah Division Resident, Datu Kueh Lei Poh, along with other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
