KUCHING: The concept of 'Segulai Sejalai' which means in Iban language, living together in unity, is very synonymous with the way of life in Sarawak.

Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Dato Sri Tiong King Sing said, Sarawak is not just a tourist destination, but is the best reflection of the true value of “Unity in Diversity”, making this state a unique example in the diverse ASEAN landscape.

“In Sarawak, the Iban proverb 'Segulai Sejalai' is not just a slogan, but a daily practice of the multi-racial and multi-religious community who together enjoy the progress and prosperity of this state,” he explained.

He said this during the 33rd ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community Council (ASCC) Meeting Welcoming Dinner here on Wednesday night.

He added that this spirit is evident in the celebration of various festivals such as Gawai, Hari Raya, Christmas and Chinese New Year which are celebrated together regardless of background.

Dato Sri Tiong added that Sarawak, which is home to 34 ethnic groups, is also being held up as a model of harmonious unity in a plural society.

The Bintulu MP also invited ASEAN delegates to witness this value for themselves during their visits to cultural heritage sites such as Annah Rais and the Sarawak Cultural Village.

The colourful cultural evening also featured a variety of Sarawak traditional dishes and art performances, thus strengthening the state's image as a vibrant and dynamic cultural tourism hub in the region.

With the theme 'Segulai Sejalai' as its main thrust, Sarawak once again proves that diversity is not an obstacle, but rather a strength in building a united regional community. - UKASnews
