KUCHING: Residents in the Gaat area of Kapit welcome the Sarawak government's proposal to construct a cascading dam at the Sungai Gaat, a tributary of Sungai Baleh.

Baleh Assemblyman, Nicholas Kudi Jantai said the construction of a cascading hydroelectric source at Sungai Gaat not only can generate electricity but also be seen as a key to infrastructure and economic development for the area.

"It is my sincere hope that the economic benefits from this dam will not only be enjoyed by the local residents but also create more opportunities to generate income for the people of Sarawak," he said.

He said this while debating the Motion of Appreciation for the Address by the Governor of Sarawak, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar during the 19th Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Session on Thursday. 

He also emphasised that the proposal to build a cascading dam at the Gaat River should be considered as an initiative to establish a renewable energy method without adversely affecting the surrounding areas. -UKASnews
