BETONG: The various initiatives implemented by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg are clear evidence of his visionary leadership and strong commitment to the well-being of the people of this state.
Take for example the introduction of the Sarawak Digital Economy Action Plan 2030 which is an initiative to transform the Sarawak economy into a sustainable technology-based economy.
According to Betong Member of Parliament, Dato Dr Richard Rapu, through this plan, the Sarawak Government is striving to ensure inclusive and responsible economic growth, while also leveraging digital technology to generate job opportunities, increase productivity, expand access to education and social services.
He said that under the 2025 Budget, the Sarawak Government has also introduced the Skim Keperluan Asas Sarawak (SKAS), financial assistance to ease the burden of target groups in facing the high cost of living.
“Also introduced is a pocket money assistance for Sarawakians worth RM1200 who are studying at IPT.
“In addition, the government also continues the 30 percent discount on PTPTN loan repayments, continues the RM500 book vouchers and the free laptop initiative for B40 families.
“Free higher education for Sarawakians will also be introduced in 2026, at five Sarawak-owned IPTs, namely ICATS University College, CENTEXS, UTS, Curtin University and Swinburne University. Focus on STEM, accounting and law fields.”
He said this while representing Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas at the Kampung Melayu Betong Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri Ceremony for 2025/1446H last Thursday.
He explained that all these initiatives prove that the Sarawak Government is not only focused on economic growth, but also ensuring that the benefits can be felt by all levels of society.
Meanwhile, Dato Dr Richard invited the diverse community in the state, especially in Betong, to continue to strengthen the spirit of brotherhood and unity in the spirit of celebrating the Aidilfitri festival.
“As a community consisting of various races and cultures, always stay away from sensitive matters, such as extreme religious practices and racism that can threaten harmony,” he stressed.
