KUCHING: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government remains committed to strengthening the state's infrastructure network to ensure better connectivity between urban and rural areas.

Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said that, through the Ministry of Infrastructure and Port Development and the Public Works Department (JKR), several major road projects are being actively implemented.

He explained that among the important projects being developed are the Sarawak Coastal Road and the Second Main Road, with both projects costing RM11 billion, including RM5.9 billion for the construction of 16 bridges.

Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said that all these costs were fully funded by Sarawak's own state funds, showing the state government's financial capability in implementing development without relying on Federal funds.

“The Sarawak Coastal Road project is expected to be completed in 2027, while the Second Trunk Road is expected to be completed in 2028.

“Recently, two new bridges, namely the Bintulu-Jepak Bridge in Bintulu and the Sungai Rajang Bridge in Sarikei, were opened for public use in conjunction with the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration.

“This is the commitment of GPS work to improve the interconnection of urban and rural areas in Sarawak. It is also proof that work always gives priority to convenience, for the comfort of the people,” he said in a special message in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2025 on Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Minister of Infrastructure Development and Ports called on Malaysians to continue to strengthen the bonds of brotherhood, tolerance, unity and harmony between people of different races and religions ahead of the upcoming Aidilfitri celebration.

He said that togetherness in the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebration is a source of strength for Malaysia to face a future full of challenges and renewal, with unity in diversity being the pillar of stability and needing to be further strengthened for common prosperity.

“Let us all stay away from sensitive issues such as religious issues and extreme sectarianism that can threaten our harmony and unity.

“Hopefully this festival will bring more blessings, health and happiness to all of us,” he said.-UKASnews
