Ministry of Transport Sarawak Supports Public-Private Partnerships To Enhance Public Transport

KUCHING: The Ministry of Transport Sarawak supports public-private partnerships (PPP) to improve public transport, including smart bus operations, river buses, and modernised bus and truck terminals.

According to Minister for Transport Sarawak Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, that PPP initiatives encourage private sector invest in fleet purchases, enhancing connectivity, safety, and service efficiency.

“Private sector participation not only improves facilities and management but also enhances logistics, making Sarawak’s public transport system more efficient, sustainable and accessible,” he stated.

He made these remarks during the Sarawak Public Transport Committee (SPTC) Meeting No.1/2025 held in Kuching recently.

During his opening remarks at the meeting, Minister emphasised the necessity for a comprehensive transport development strategy to ensure the resilience and future readiness of Sarawak’s transport system.

The meeting provided a vital platform to discuss transport challenges across all divisions, with 12 Division DPTC Chairmen presenting key transport issues and proposing new projects for the 13th Malaysia Plan (RMK-13).

Dato Sri Lee urged all divisions to submit well-planned, forward-thinking proposals that address both short-term needs and long-term sustainability.

In terms of land transport and logistics, the Minister called for continuous road network improvements and explore additional measures to reduce congestion, enhance road safety, and improve freight efficiency.

He also emphasised the need to promote alternative transportation methods such as better pedestrian infrastructure and more efficient public transport systems, ensuring that policies align with economic growth by facilitating smoother logistics operations and reducing transportation costs.

Recognising the vital role of river transport, particularly in rural areas, the Minister stressed the importance of modernising existing infrastructure, ensuring safety compliance, and integrating environmentally friendly transport solutions.

“As we prepare for RMK-13, all transport initiatives must align with sustainable development goals, focusing on reducing carbon emissions, integrating green technologies, and adopting modern transport solutions that will serve Sarawak in the long term,” Dato Sri Lee stated.

Also present were Deputy Minister for Transport, Sarawak I (Aviation and Road), Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, Deputy Minister for Transport, Sarawak II (Riverine and Marine), Dato Henry Harry Jinep, and Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Transport Sarawak Datu Wong Hee Sieng.-UKASnews
