LUNDU: The rising drug abuse among the younger generation is a significant challenge in efforts to develop quality human capital.

Opar Assemblyman, Billy Sujang, expressed his concern during the officiation of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Programme for the Bokah Zone 2 Community in Kampung Bokah on Saturday.

"Drug abuse involving young people is a serious problem as it can be detrimental to us as a society," he said.

"As a result, we risk losing valuable human capital needed for the country's development," he added.

In his speech, Billy stressed that the younger generation is the nation's most valuable asset and must be protected to ensure they can contribute to the country's future growth.

To address the issue, he suggested that more education and awareness programmes be implemented, while also encouraging community involvement in activities that can benefit their socio-economic development.

The CSR programme included various engaging activities, such as sports, health talks, and the distribution of government assistance aimed at supporting the community.

"Through programmes like this, we hope to provide young people with opportunities to engage in positive activities and avoid negative influences such as drugs.

"We will also continue to improve sports facilities so that they have suitable places for recreation," he added.

This CSR programme marks the second event held in Bokah Zone 2 and was attended by several local leaders.

During the same event, Billy also presented a special wheelchair to the child of Stephen Nyokien, as a gesture of concern for the needs of individuals within the community.

With the emphasis on tackling drug abuse, this programme is expected to strengthen efforts to develop a generation of young people who are not only physically healthy but also competitive and of high quality.

Also present were Lundu District Administrative Officer, Monalissa Mariah Brain, Penghulu Jinep Jiheng, Kampung Bokah Village Chief, Sylvester Dize, and Chairman of Bokah Zone 2 Community, Gom Boyet. -UKASnews
