KUCHING: Diplomatic relations between Malaysia and the United Kingdom were further bolstered on Thursday with a courtesy visit by the Speaker of the House of Commons, Sir Lindsay Hoyle, to Sarawak Governor Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at Astana Negeri Sarawak.

The Sarawak Governor, accompanied by his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi, warmly received Sir Lindsay Hoyle and his delegation.

The visit reflects the ongoing commitment to enhancing the strong ties shared between the two nations.

The purpose of the visit was to strengthen bilateral relations and exchange views on the parliamentary democracy systems practiced by Malaysia and the UK. Both countries share a rich history of diplomatic ties, a constitutional monarchy, and a parliamentary democracy system.

Key topics discussed during the meeting included constitutional matters, legislation, parliamentary rules, and the pivotal role of parliament in promoting good governance.

The federal system, including the relationship between federal and state governments, was also an area of focus.

Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi underscored the significance of Malaysia’s active membership in the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) and how it facilitates cooperation among legislative institutions across Commonwealth nations.

He described the visit as a vital step in strengthening bilateral relations, expressing hope that it would lead to more collaboration in various sectors, benefiting the people of both nations.

Among the delegation were Sarawak Regional Director of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Fenny Nuli, Acting British High Commissioner, David Wallace, Chief of Staff to the UK Speaker, Helen Wood, Deputy Chief of Staff, David Clark, Institutional and Governance Officer at the British High Commission, Farah Nor, and Government Relations and Protocol Officer, Iman Hamdan. -UKASnews
