LONG LAMA: Over 400 residents from diverse ethnic backgrounds gathered at Dewan SJKC Kee Tee on Monday for a vibrant celebration of Pesta Angpao and Chinese New Year 2025, marking a festive highlight for the close-knit community of Pekan Long Lama.
The event, officiated by Telang Usan Assemblyman Dato Dennis Ngau, was a testament to the enduring community spirit of the local Chinese residents, who have managed to keep the tradition alive despite their small numbers.
Dato Dennis commended the Chinese community for their dedication in celebrating the Chinese New Year, emphasising the unique identity of Long Lama, where many Chinese residents are fluent in the Kayan language.
"This is what makes Long Lama special," Dato Dennis said during the event. "The harmony in this mixed community, with different races living and working together, is the foundation of progress."
The celebration kicked off with a lively lion dance performance by local Chinese youth, bringing energy and excitement to the event.
It was followed by the traditional Lao Sheng ceremony, symbolising prosperity and good fortune for the year ahead.
In a heartwarming gesture, the community also honoured its elders, distributing angpao to around 30 senior citizens in attendance, adding to the festive joy of the occasion.
The event was made even more meaningful with the presence of Organising Chairman of the Long Lama Pesta Angpao, Kapitan Vun Boon Khium, Telang Usan District Officer, Ezra Uda, and Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Dominic Nyurang Ajang, who joined in the celebrations, underscoring the unity and camaraderie of the Long Lama community. -UKASnews
