MIRI: Swift action is set to be taken to combat the worsening coastal erosion at Lutong Beach, which has become a pressing concern for the local authorities.
Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, revealed that the issue has been actively discussed with Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Minister for Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, and Miri City Mayor, Adam Yii Siew Sang.
“We’ve had extensive discussions on this matter and have already reached out to the Deputy Prime Minister, Dato’ Sri Fadillah Yusof, to request immediate intervention,” said Datuk Sebastian during a press conference at the Piasau Service Centre on Monday.
He further disclosed that action is underway, stating, “This morning, at 10:19 a.m., the Deputy Prime Minister’s office responded with instructions for temporary measures to be initiated right away.”
Expressing concern, Datuk Sebastian warned that any delay in addressing the issue could worsen the situation, especially with the ongoing rainy season, which exacerbates the erosion.
The Piasau Assemblyman shared that the total cost of the erosion restoration project is estimated at RM45 million.
However, due to the increasingly critical state of the affected area, an immediate allocation of RM5 million has been requested to fund emergency temporary works aimed at stabilising the shoreline and preventing further damage.
To ensure swift action, Datuk Sebastian added that both the Sarawak State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) and the Miri Disaster Management Committee (MDMC) have been contacted to secure emergency funds.
As an additional safety measure, he has requested assistance from the police to place warning signs at high-risk areas to safeguard road users.
“I hope the public will understand the gravity of the situation and remain patient while the restoration works are carried out,” said Datuk Sebastian, assuring that every effort is being made to ensure the problem is resolved as quickly as possible. -UKASnews
