KUCHING: Any compounds issued during the Sarawak Integrated Rabies Enforcement Operation should not be taken lightly by the public.

Instead, the compounds issued by the District Councils or the Department of Veterinary Services Sarawak (DVSS) are enforcement measures under the Veterinary Public Health Ordinance, 1999, as there are still recorded cases of Rabies in Sarawak.

It was found that many dog owners still refuse to send their pet dogs to the mass vaccination programmes conducted by the District Councils before this operation begins.

The owners who receive compounds can apply for discounts from DVSS and the District Councils if payment is made within 14 days.

Therefore, they should take the compounds issued during this operation as a warning of the danger of the Rabies outbreak rather than creating negative perceptions.

On the third day of operations in the Landeh area, the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) issued a total of 20 compounds to those not having a dog license, while DVSS issued 22 compounds for owners who did not vaccinate their dogs.

In addition, DVSS, in collaboration with the Sarawak Security and Enforcement Unit (UKPS), successfully vaccinated a total of 18 dogs while MPP registered 61 dogs.

Meanwhile, only eights stray dogs were captured by MPP. -UKASnews
