KUCHING: The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak Division has issued a reminder to employers and workers regarding the implementation of the Minimum Wage Order (PGM), which has come into effect on February 1, 2025, setting the minimum wage at RM1,700 per month.

Chairman of MTUC Sarawak Division, Zaidi Nasar, stated that this order mandates employers with five or more employees to comply with the minimum wage requirement.

He added that employers engaged in professional activities are also subject to the order, regardless of the number of workers employed.

“For employers with fewer than five employees, the order will be effective from August 1, 2025.

“MTUC emphasises that the minimum wage refers to basic salary and does not include allowances, incentives, or other additional payments,” he said in a statement on Saturday.

Zaidi Nasar further explained that workers paid on a task-based, tonnage, assignment, journey, or commission basis are also entitled to receive a monthly wage of no less than RM1,700.

He stressed that employers are not allowed to pay a basic wage lower than the stipulated minimum wage, even with the consent of the employee.

“In cases of non-compliance, employees are encouraged to lodge complaints with the Department of Labour.

“In addition, MTUC urges employees to spread this information to their colleagues and employers, while also striving to enhance productivity and foster good relations with employers for mutual benefit.

“This increase in the minimum wage is intended to help workers cope with the rising cost of living,” he added.
