ASAJAYA: The flood situation in Sarawak is showing signs of improvement, with 12 Temporary Evacuation Centres (PPS) having been closed since last night.
Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Chairman of the State Disaster Management Committee (SDMC), Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, reported that the number of operational PPS has now been reduced to 63, housing 3,722 families and 12,402 evacuees.
“As of this morning (Sunday), seven PPS in Kuching, one in Serian, one in Saratok, and three in Sibu have been closed, affecting 972 individuals and 287 families.
“This reflects positive progress in the flood recovery efforts across the state.
“Most evacuees have successfully returned home, but several areas remain cut off due to damaged roads,” he said.
He shared this update during a press briefing after inspecting PPS SK Sampun Tebun in Asajaya on Thursday.
In addition, Datuk Amar Uggah said the Public Works Department (JKR) has been directed to assess and repair roads damaged by the floods.
“The Federal Government has also issued instructions for immediate action to address the damage to infrastructure in affected areas.
“As a long-term solution, the government is considering constructing permanent evacuation centres to replace the use of schools and public halls as temporary shelters. One identified location is SK Beradik,” he added.
Datuk Amar Uggah further mentioned that the government is assessing other suitable locations for permanent evacuation centres, particularly in flood-prone areas.
On the possibility of a second wave of flooding, the SDMC has been in a state of preparedness since last November, with measures in place until March.
“All relevant agencies have been instructed to remain on high alert, ensuring the readiness of equipment, manpower, as well as food and welfare aid.
“We hope the situation continues to improve, but we are prepared for any eventuality should the floods return,” he revealed.
Following the visit, Datuk Amar Uggah also toured PPS SK Haji Kelali, Semera, Asajaya, accompanied by Minister of Tourism, Creative Industries and Performing Arts, Dato’ Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, and Deputy Minister of Infrastructure and Port Development, and Sadong Jaya State Assemblyman (ADUN), Datuk Ir Aidil Lariwoo.
