MIRI: Sarawak is exploring nuclear energy as an option for its future energy landscape, although the abundant hydrogen resources in the state offer a more sustainable and renewable alternative.
Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, stated that while modular nuclear reactors have the potential to serve as a major energy source, the challenge of obtaining uranium renders them less practical for Sarawak.
"Nuclear energy requires uranium, and uranium is not an easily available resource. However, Sarawak enjoys a unique advantage with its plentiful hydrogen supply – derived not only from methane but also from water (H₂O)," he explained.
He made these remarks during the 2025 Chinese New Year Dinner of the SUPP Miri Division at the Imperial Hotel, Miri, on Friday.
Furthermore, he emphasised that hydrogen can be combined with carbon to produce synthetic fuel, which holds the potential to replace nuclear energy, positioning Sarawak as a leader in green energy.
In addition, he noted that Sarawak is currently collaborating with Japan on the production of ammonia, which is expected to become a primary fuel in the marine industry.
"Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba has invited me to meet and discuss the production of ammonia as the ‘fuel of the marine industry’," he said.
Previously, the Premier also expressed his gratitude to the federal government for entrusting the state with the management of the gas industry, thereby opening up further opportunities in the energy and petrochemical sectors.
Also in attendance were Sarawak Deputy Premiers, Datuk Amar Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian and Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Sarawak Minister of Transport, Dato Sri Lee Kim Shin, Minister of Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Economic Planning and Development), Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Abdullah Zaidel, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting, Chairman of the Sarawak Branch of the Red Crescent Society, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam, and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
