DOHA: Malaysia and Qatar continue to strengthen their diplomatic ties, emphasising close cooperation between the parliaments of both nations and aligning their stances on global issues, particularly the Palestinian cause.
Senator Dato’ Awang Bemme Awang Ali Basah, President of the Malaysian Senate, led the Malaysian Parliamentary delegation on a courtesy visit to the Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Qatar, Sheikh Mohammad Abdulrahman Jassim Al Thani, on Wednesday.
During the meeting, he underscored the importance of expanding parliamentary cooperation, particularly in the exchange of information, best practices, and efforts to coordinate joint positions at regional and international levels.
In line with Malaysia's Chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2025, he also expressed hope that Malaysia-Qatar relations could be further broadened within the framework of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and other regional platforms.
Aside from discussing bilateral relations, Malaysia also extended its congratulations to Qatar for its role in brokering the ceasefire negotiations in Gaza, Palestine.
Both nations agreed to continue supporting the Palestinian struggle and coordinate efforts at international forums to achieve lasting peace in the Middle East.
In concluding the discussions, Senator Dato’ Awang Bemme expressed his appreciation to the government of Qatar for its warm hospitality and commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
The official visit, which is taking place from January 26 to 30, is expected to further solidify parliamentary cooperation and contribute to more dynamic relations between Kuala Lumpur and Doha.
The Malaysian delegation also includes Senators, Tan Sri Datuk Seri Panglima Anifah Aman and Pele Peter Tinggom, along with senior officials from the Malaysian Senate. -UKASnews
