KUCHING: The Sarawak government urges the people in the state to play a role in limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, a critical threshold to avoid disaster effects.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg stated that if carbon emissions are reduced below the 1.5-degree Celsius global warming threshold, sea level rise will not occur.

"Otherwise, water temperatures will rise, coral reefs and fish will die, causing sea levels to rise.

"Today, I see fish dying in Vietnam due to rising water temperatures, as well as in Bangladesh. The temperature in those areas is 42 degrees Celsius,” he said.

He made these remarks when met by reporters after attending the SEB Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri event at the Menara SEB here, on Thursday.

Commenting on a viral post on social media that Kuching is among the major cities in Malaysia that could potentially disappear from the map and be below sea level by the year 2050, the Sarawak Premier urged people not to panic as the statement is based on assumptions that can change at any time. -UKASnews
