KUCHING: The Sarawak government has amended relevant laws to allow the private sector to participate in power generation activities in the state.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg stated that Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) will play a major role in facilitating energy supply through this private generation initiative.

"SEB is the main agency responsible for energy development, although power generation can be carried out by the private sector, SEB ensures compliance with small equity.

“However, they can supply energy, whether in terms of solar energy or the power generation I mentioned earlier, which will increase energy production for the main grid where SEB is the main supplier," he said.

He made these remarks while speaking at the SEB Ramah Tamah Aidilfitri event at the Menara SEB here, on Thursday.

The Sarawak Premier added that the legislative aspects which have been made and amended could help shape Sarawak's future in developing renewable energy.

Meanwhile, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari informed that he will visit Bangkok, Thailand, soon to share insights on energy development from Sarawak's perspective.

"I have the opportunity to share with the people of Europe, in Poland, and God willing, I will share again in Bangkok about energy development from Sarawak's perspective, especially during the transition period from fossil fuels to renewable energy.

"Alhamdulillah, we can also share our views with outsiders, so when I go there, I will be representing Sarawak and SEB," he said.

Also present at the event were Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Professor Dr Sim Kui Hian, Sarawak Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Dato Sri Dr Stephen Rundi Utom, Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Liwan Lagang, and SEB Group Chief Executive Officer, Datuk Sharbini Suhaili. -UKASnews
