KUCHING: The Women in Orange Economy (WIOE) 2025 programme is set to empower 100 women across various sectors.

Federal Minister of Women, Family, and Community Development, Dato' Sri Nancy Shukri, stated that the programme provides an opportunity for young women to engage in creative, political, and economic endeavours.

"In Sarawak and throughout Malaysia, the participation of women in leadership roles is still lacking. Therefore, we must provide opportunities for young women to develop their leadership potential," she said.

She made the remarks during a press conference following the conclusion of the Women in Orange Economy (PERANTIS) Programme at the Sarawak State Library on Sunday.

Dato' Sri Nancy noted that the programme received a positive response, with thousands of applications submitted each year.

“In 2024 alone, we received over a thousand applications, of which 1,040 were considered, and 25 participants were selected for the finalist stage.

“A total allocation of RM5 million has been set aside to support the programme, with each participant eligible to receive up to RM50,000 to fund their projects.

“The selection process is rigorous, focusing on participants' leadership potential and expertise, whether in politics, economics, or other fields. A panel will select candidates based on their abilities,” she added.

The programme is expected to further develop young women leaders and position Sarawak as a role model for empowering women in various fields. -UKASnews
