KUCHING: The implementation of syariah law in Sarawak not only reflects the commitment to uphold Islamic teachings but also serves as an effort to enhance the well-being of Muslims in areas such as family matters, inheritance management, ethics, and the sanctity of Islamic institutions.

According to Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Dr. Abdul Rahman Junaidi, Sarawak adopts an inclusive and pragmatic approach to implementing syariah law, ensuring it respects the sensitivities of the state’s multireligious and multicultural society, as syariah law applies exclusively to Muslims.

“This approach aligns with the principles of 'maqasid syariah', which aim to preserve the five essential aspects of human life consisting of religion, life, intellect, lineage, and property.

"Through fair and just syariah laws, we can strengthen family institutions, enforce syariah criminal laws, and foster a virtuous society,” he said.

He said this during the Statesman’s Lecture (Syarahan Negarawan) held in conjunction with the opening of the Syariah Legal Year at Majma’ Hall Tunku Abd Halim Mu’adzam Shah on Tuesday.

The event was graced by Sarawak Governor, Tun Pehin Sri Dr. Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and his wife, Toh Puan Datuk Patinggi Fauziah Mohd Sanusi.

He said the valuable insights shared by the Sarawak Governor are important in strengthening the administration of syariah law and ensuring its continued relevance in Sarawak.

During the event, the Sarawak Syariah Court Journal was launched, marking a significant milestone in documenting the progress and insights of the syariah legal system in Sarawak.
