U19 Women's Cricket World Cup Gateway To Position Sarawak As World-Class Tourism Destination

KUCHING: The International Cricket Council (ICC) Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup which is taking place in Sarawak is a golden opportunity for international participants to explore the beauty and uniqueness of the culture of the Land of the Hornbills.

Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this sporting event provides an opportunity for Sarawak to showcase its heritage to the world.

According to him, visits to the Sarawak Cultural Village (SCV) have been planned to introduce participants to the traditions of Sarawak’s diverse ethnic groups, while a trip to the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre will offer them a unique experience to observe orangutans in their natural habitat.

"The beauty of Sarawak lies in the harmony between the community and its nature.

“We hope the participants will take home not only wonderful memories of the competition but also valuable experiences of Sarawak's culture and uniqueness,” he said.

He said this in his text of speech delivered by Deputy Minister of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Gerald Rentap Jabu at the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Dinner at a leading hotel here, on Monday. 

Dato Sri Abdul Karim added that the championship has also gained global attention, with live broadcasts reaching 180 countries via Star TV and ICC's social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

With over 106 million followers worldwide, the event presents a significant opportunity to position Sarawak as a world-class tourism destination.
“International participants from Nigeria, Samoa, New Zealand, and South Africa are not only competing on the field but also immersing themselves in Sarawak's unique culture.

“This spirit makes the championship an ideal platform to foster mutual understanding and unity between nations through sports and culture,” he said.

Also present were Deputy Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, Deputy Sarawak Secretary (Operation), Datu Hii Chang Kee, and other guests. -UKASnews
