KUALA LUMPUR: Sarawak is poised to become a key regional hub for energy transition through its strong potential in fostering investment and trade relations with foreign nations.
Prime Minister, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that his series of meetings with world leaders, including the President of Indonesia and the Prime Minister of Japan, would bolster economic strength, particularly in the fields of digital economy and energy transition.
“President of Indonesia, Prabowo Subianto, will meet with me during his official visit, which is expected to enhance economic cooperation between Malaysia and Indonesia, including in the digital sector.
“Tomorrow, the Prime Minister of Japan will also arrive in Malaysia, and we will discuss several issues related to investment and trade.
“We hope these discussions will position Malaysia, specifically Sarawak, as the energy hub for this region,” he said.
The Prime Minister made the remarks while delivering his keynote address at the Malaysia Economic Forum (MEF) 2025 held here on Thursday.
Present at the event were Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, Deputy Prime Minister, Datuk Patinggi Dr. Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Minister of Works, Dato Sri Alexander Nanta Linggi, several Cabinet Ministers, and other distinguished guests.
Additionally, the Prime Minister highlighted that Malaysia’s chairmanship of ASEAN presents a crucial opportunity to build collective strength among ASEAN citizens and bring shared benefits to the region.
“This is something we emphasised together with the Prime Minister of Singapore. For instance, Singapore no longer views Malaysia’s strength as something to be sidelined, nor should we disregard the potential of Thailand or other ASEAN nations.
“However, we must also seek ways and methods to resolve complicated issues, such as the situation in Myanmar. This is because the primary requirement for economic strength is peace, political stability, clear policies, and economic strategies that can build resilience through private sector involvement and public sector efficiency,” he stressed.
The Prime Minister also noted that MEF 2025 provides an opportunity for Malaysia to focus and identify strategies to further strengthen its economy.
He pointed out that new economic opportunities need to be explored to prevent Malaysia from lagging behind.
“While industries such as semiconductors in Penang have been around for a long time, if we are not ready to explore new areas, we will fall behind.
“We must have comprehensive strength so that this power can propel us forward,” he added. -UKASnews
