KUCHING: The Sarawak Government is planning to organise the 2025 Borneo Games on a smaller scale, proposing to feature only four or five events.
Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development (MYSED), Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said this iteration of the biennial games aims to revive the event which has been inactive for quite some time.
He noted that the sports to be contested are still under discussion, with the games set to be centred in Kuching.
"We will start small with only four or five sports, but as the Borneo Games gain attention, we will expand it further
"If possible, we want the first edition of the Borneo Games to be held in Kuching this year.
"As for the types of sports, we are still in the planning stage and are discussing them with participating states and countries," he said.
He said this during the ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup Press Conference held at the Godown Amphitheatre, Kuching Waterfront, on Monday.
The Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP) also clarified that the date for the Borneo Games has yet to be finalised, but the Federal Territory of Labuan contingent has confirmed its participation.
For the record, participating regions include Sarawak, Brunei Darussalam, Sabah, Kalimantan, and the Federal Territory of Labuan.
