KUCHING: Sarawak's spirit of multicultural harmony and unity takes centre stage in the forthcoming Chinese New Year music video, produced by the Kuching South City Council (MBKS).

Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian expressed his appreciation to MBKS for leading the project, noting that the video exemplifies Sarawak's unique cultural blend as the state advances towards its Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030).

“Many Sarawakians, as well as others across Malaysia, have observed how much Sarawak has transformed over the past decade. The difference between 2014 and 2024 is striking. However, the next six years will be even more crucial as we continue on this transformative journey.

“It is vital for all Sarawakians to come together to preserve the best aspects of Sarawak—our unity, harmony, and peace. These are the foundations that will enable us to focus on our progress, especially in achieving our goals for PCDS 2030, the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and securing health and education autonomy in our nation-building efforts,” he remarked.

Datuk Amar Dr. Sim made these comments when met by reporters following the recording of the music video at MBKS Park on Sunday.

Meanwhile, MBKS Mayor, Dato Wee Hong Seng, highlighted that the video also aims to promote Padungan’s rich cultural heritage, showcasing its historical sites and murals.

“The music video not only celebrates the festive season but also highlights the cultural and historical significance of the Padungan area, with its vibrant murals and old town charm. We hope this will attract more tourists to explore this part of the city,” he explained.

Dato Wee also addressed recent public discussions about the iconic white cat statue in Padungan, which was dressed in traditional Chinese attire for the video to match the festive theme.

He clarified that it would have been inappropriate to feature the cat in its previous Christmas outfit, given the context of the Chinese New Year celebration.

“We assure the public that we are mindful of these seasonal changes. Dressing the cat according to festive themes is part of our effort to bring in more visitors and enhance the city’s appeal. We welcome all feedback, especially constructive criticism, which helps us improve,” Dato Wee added. - UKASnews
