KUCHING: Sarawak will implement 100 percent electricity generation using green energy sources without depending on materials that can pollute the environment.

The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said that the state government will ask Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to convert two coal-powered plants owned by the company into biomass power plants.

This move will emulate the Drax Power Plant in North Yorkshire, England, which the Sarawak Premier had visited recently.

“We have power stations that use coal, which is in Sejingkat and Balingian. What happened in Drax, it used coal and now it is replaced by biomass, and the investment is not much because the system is similar.

"We will use this for Sejingkat and Balingian, we can even generate more than 500 megawatts. We only strengthen the boiler and in terms of the machinery," he said.

He said this when met by reporters after officiating the International Water Day National Level celebration held at Kuching Waterfront on Sunday.

Currently, SEB's coal plant in Sejingkat produces 210 megawatts of energy while coal plants in Mukah and Balingian produce 270 and 624 megawatts of energy respectively. -UKASnews
