KUCHING: The Sarawak Construction Industry Excellence and Appreciation Awards 2024 highlighted the important role of the construction sector as a key driver of the state’s infrastructure and economic growth.

Deputy Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government (MPHLG), Datuk Michael Tiang Ming Tee, said that the construction sector not only serves as the backbone of Sarawak's growth but also significantly contributes to the region’s vision of becoming a developed region by 2030.

He explained that this aligns with the Post-COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which focuses on achieving net-zero carbon emissions and addressing climate change challenges.

“Sarawak is transitioning from fossil fuels to green energy, creating sustainable investment opportunities for a better future,” he said in a speech delivered by Batu Kitang Assemblyman, Dato Ir Lo Khere Chiang, at the awards ceremony held at the CIDB Sarawak Convention Centre on Thursday.

He added that Sarawak’s revenue has shown significant growth, rising from RM5.8 billion in 2018 to RM13.3 billion last year, with projections of even higher figures this year.

However, he stressed that challenges in the sector persist, including 37 per cent of premises lacking active fire certification and underperforming projects (sick project).

“It is important for all stakeholders to adhere to regulatory standards to build a safe and prosperous Sarawak for the long term,” he added.

Meanwhile, the event saw several awards presented, including the Best Qlassic Award 2023-2024 to Song Kau Construction Sdn Bhd, the Best Shassic Award 2023-2024 to China Communications Construction Company (M) Sdn Bhd, the Best IBS Award 2024 to Welfield Services Sdn Bhd, the Best MyCrest Award 2024 to Riaplus Sdn Bhd, the Best Score Award 2024 to Hock Peng Engineering Sdn Bhd, and the Best Mcore Award 2024 to Tatai Mas.

The Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR) won two awards, which are the Qlassic Commitment Appreciation Award 2024 and the BIM Commitment Appreciation Award 2024, while Sarawak Energy Berhad received the Shassic Commitment Appreciation Award 2024.

The ceremony also recognised award recipients as exemplary figures who integrate innovation, dedication, and adherence to quality construction principles, inspiring industry peers to pursue excellence and drive transformative change. -UKASnews
