Marubeni Affirms Intention To Invest In Sustainable Projects In Sarawak

TOKYO: Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, held a key meeting with Marubeni Corporation during his official visit to Tokyo, Japan on Wednesday.

This meeting served as a follow-up to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in May 2024 between Marubeni Corporation and Invest Sarawak Sdn. Bhd., the one-stop investment agency under the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment. 

The MoU was aimed at conducting a feasibility study on the production and sale of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) using biomass resources.

In addition to the potential investment in SAF, Marubeni Corporation has reaffirmed its commitment to explore other sustainable ventures in Sarawak. 

These include projects in chemical production and renewable energy, aligning with Sarawak's Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, which focuses on achieving economic prosperity, social inclusivity, and environmental sustainability.

Datuk Amar Awang Tengah who is also Sarawak Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment and Second Minister for Natural Resources and Urban Development, expressed his optimism about Marubeni’s interest and investment, emphasising the significance of these collaborations in fostering sustainable development in Sarawak. 

He also expressed the state's eagerness to strengthen its partnership with Marubeni in support of Sarawak’s green growth and long-term development goals.

The meeting underscores Sarawak’s commitment to advancing its sustainability goals while fostering international partnerships that contribute to a cleaner and more prosperous future.

Accompanying the Deputy Premier were Sarawak Deputy Minister for International Trade, Industry and Investment, Datuk Dr. Malcolm Mussen Lamoh; Advisor to the Ministry of International Trade, Industry and Investment (MINTRED), Dato Sri Mohd. Naroden Majais; MINTRED Permanent Secretary, Dzulkornain Masron; Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Urban Development, Datu Abdullah Julaihi; Director of MIDA Tokyo, Izran Abdullah; CEO of Invest Sarawak, Timothy Ong; and Senior Vice President of Business Management at Sarawak Energy Berhad, Nick Wright, alongside other senior officials from the Sarawak Government.
