BEKENU: The role of community leaders and village chiefs (KMKK) as grassroots leaders is crucial in fostering a culture of integrity while ensuring fair and transparent development within their communities.

According to the Sarawak Deputy Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datuk Rosey Yunus, KMKK must serve as role models for their communities and take responsibility for monitoring development projects in their respective areas.

“This effort aims to ensure all projects are carried out according to specifications without any misuse of power or corruption,” she said during the officiation of the Jelajah Integriti Siri 18 Bil. 9/2024 Daerah Subis, recently.

She further emphasised that KMKK, together with the Village Development and Security Committees (JKKK), act as the government’s eyes and ears.

"Any non-compliance or delays in projects must be reported so appropriate action can be taken,” she added.

The Bekenu Assemblywoman also urged KMKK to address social issues affecting community integrity, such as family problems, gambling, domestic violence against women and children, and drug abuse.

“Integrity isn’t solely about economic and developmental aspects, it also encompasses the welfare and safety of communities and families,” she stated.

Additionally, she highlighted her support for government initiatives like the establishment of Integrity Units in government agencies and the Certified Integrity Officer (CeIO) programme.

These efforts, she said, play a vital role in strengthening the culture of integrity among civil servants and the general public.

Also present were the Deputy Minister in the Premier's Department (Integrity and Ombudsman), Datuk Dr Juanda Jaya, acting Miri Resident representative Arshad Samshu, Subis District Officer Norlila Ulis, and others. -UKASnews
