KUCHING: Inspired by the uniqueness of Lutong where a church and mosque stand side by side, the same concept will be adopted to build houses of worship for the Muslim and Christian communities in Sebauh.

Sarawak Minister for Food Industry, Commodity and Regional Development, Dato Sri Dr. Stephen Rundi Utom said the strong spirit of unity and mutual respect highlighted in Lutong inspired him for the development of both houses of worship side by side in Sebauh which will also share the same parking lot.

“With that idea, I will also implement a project in Sebauh, a district under my supervision where we have five acres of land for a mosque and five acres of land for a church.

“These houses of worship will also share the same parking lot, only separated by a fence outside. This will reflect the religious tolerance we strive to present to the world,” he said.

He said this when met by the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) after a visit to St Peter's Catholic Church here on Monday.

According to the Kemena Assemblyman, the Sarawak Government has approved RM20 million, with each house of worship receiving RM10 million to begin the project.

It is understood that the project is currently in the tender process. -UKASnews
