SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024 Baton Relay Begins, Lawas As Start Destination

LAWAS: The Malaysia Games (SUKMA) XXI Sarawak 2024 Baton Relay kicks off today in the Limbang Division to promote the upcoming biennial sports event, which will take place from August 17 to 24.

The launch of this edition's Baton Relay will be a significant event in the history to be recorded in conjunction with SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024.

The SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024 Baton Relay will continue to Miri, Bintulu, Sibu, Mukah, Sri Aman, Betong, Kota Samarahan, Serian, and to conclude in Kuching on June 23.

Sarawak Deputy State Secretary (Operation) cum Chief Executive Officer of SUKMA and Para SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024, Datu Hii Chang Kee, officiated the flag-off for the SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024 Baton Relay at Taman Awam Lawas here at 8 a.m.

Also present were the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datu Felicia Tan Ya Hua, Chief Executive Officer of Sarawak Sports Corporation, Awang Putrayusrie Awang Reduan, Limbang Division Resident, Unus Tambi, and Lawas District Officer, Ladin Atok.

Meanwhile, the opening ceremony of the SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024 Baton Relay was officiated by the Sarawak Minister of Youth, Sports, and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah.

More than 100 participants from the Limbang Division and invited contingents from Brunei Darussalam took part in the baton relay.

Led by the silat sports icon, Zamri Matnor, who has won medals in every championship participated in locally and internationally. He was accompanied by Paralympic swimming athlete, Jamery Siga, and weightlifting sports icon, Lai Tze Hua.

The fourth sports icon involved is Jeffery Tamba representing weightlifting, and Bajury Ladis representing Malaysian Paralympic athletes in sports.

About 1,000 visitors from Limbang and Lawas areas attended, enlivening the atmosphere and participating in various activities such as Mega Aerobics Sarawak X-Tive and several e-sports competitions.

For the record, it is estimated that over 12,000 athletes will be staying in nine divisions in the state to participate in the 37 sports that will be contested in the upcoming sports festival. -UKASnews
