SEBUYAU: Sarawak is currently exploring a new technology that serves a dual purpose in generating electricity and irrigation systems that can be used for rice cultivation.

Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, stated that considering the construction project of a dam to prevent the intrusion of saltwater along the Sebuyau coastline is underway, water from Batang Lupar can now be used to irrigate paddy fields.

"So, I have a new method, which is to extract water from Batang Lupar by suction and channel it to a tank called an 'elevated tank.'

"When we use water from this tank through pipes, at the end, we will install a turbine that will generate electricity," he explained.

He said this during his speech at the Sebuyau District Aidilfitri Gathering 2024 on Saturday.

Sarawak Premier explained that the water reservoir would then be distributed to the rice cultivation area through the irrigation system.

"When water rises to the tank, goes to the turbine, and water collects in one place, this collected water will be used to irrigate the rice cultivation area.

"This means that this power-generating area will have two different functions," he explained.

Meanwhile, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari mentioned that such studies have not yet been conducted in any state in Malaysia, making Sarawak a pioneer in water-based new technology. -UKASnews
