Kuching’s Wayang Street came alive today with tradition and devotion as thousands gathered to commemorate the birthday of Guang-Ze-Zun-Wang (Seng Ong Kong Deity) at the historic Hong San Si Temple.
This procession of deities, known as “You Shen”, is a long-standing cultural practice observed during festive occasions and on the birthdays of deities. It involves ceremonially inviting deity statues into palanquins and carrying them through the streets, symbolising their descent into the mortal realm to bless the community, bring peace, and safeguard well-being.
This cherished annual event reflected a strong sense of unity and mutual respect, with participants and observers from diverse faiths and backgrounds coming together in celebration. The presence of Heads of Religions and interfaith representatives embodied the spirit of harmony, mutual respect, and solidarity that lies at the heart of Sarawak’s vibrant multicultural identity.
The ceremony was graced and officiated by YB Datuk Amar Prof. Dr. Sim Kui Hian, Deputy Premier of Sarawak and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government. Among the other distinguished dignitaries present were MBKS Mayor YBhg. Dato Wee Hong Seng, YBhg. Dato Georgina Apphia Ngau, Director of UNIFOR, and YBhg. Dato Sri Richard Wee, President of the Kuching Hokkien Association and the Federation of Sarawak Temple Associations, alongside other prominent figures.
Their collective presence highlighted the importance of interfaith collaboration in fostering greater understanding, mutual respect, and social cohesion within the community. The presence of the UNIFOR team also reflected the Sarawak Government’s continued commitment to supporting and safeguarding the interests of other religions in Sarawak.
A total of 222 troupes took part in the procession, attracting a large and enthusiastic crowd of both locals and foreign visitors. The procession moved from the city centre to Wayang Street, creating a truly vibrant and remarkable spectacle.
The Guang-Ze-Zun-Wang procession stands as a testament to Kuching’s rich cultural heritage, bringing communities together in a vibrant expression of devotion, unity, and shared values.
