Continental Shelf Rights Are Absolute, Not Subject To Transfer Or Negotiation

KUCHING: The continental shelf rights within Sarawak's territorial waters are an absolute right of the state and are not subject to any transfer or negotiation with the Federal Government, Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, has asserted. He emphasised that this matter is enshrined under the 1958 Land Code, which clearly states that the seabed and subsoil of Sarawak belong to the Sarawak Government, even after the formation of Malaysia. "The Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and the United Kingdom Malaysia Act 1963 do not confer ownership of any land within the continental shelf in Sarawak's boundaries to the Federal Government," he said. "Thus, the Federal Government has no ownership over Sarawak's seabed, subsoil, or continental shelf, as these rights are granted solely to the State of Sarawak under the law," he explained during his winding-up speech at the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Wednesday. Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari further stated that the 2009 Continental Shelf (Amendment) Act explicitly safeguards Sarawak's rights over the seabed and subsoil within its territorial boundaries, aligning federal legislation with Sarawak’s sovereignty. "No one has the authority to question Sarawak's inalienable rights over its continental shelf. Doing so would not only contravene MA63 but also violate both the State Constitution and the Federal Constitution," he stressed. This legal framework allows Sarawak to assert its claims over all oil and gas resources within its territory, a right that has been recognised since the British colonial period and after independence.-UKASnews

RM1,200 Special Aid For All Sarawak IPT Students Regardless Of Household Income

KUCHING: All Sarawakian students enrolled in Institutions of Higher Learning (IPT) across the country are eligible to receive a special cash aid of RM1,200, regardless of their family's per capita income. This was announced by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, following concerns raised by several Assembly members about using household income per capita as a criterion for eligibility. "I have heard these concerns, and I am pleased to announce that all Sarawakian students pursuing their studies in higher learning institutions throughout Malaysia will be eligible, regardless of their family income," he said during his winding-up speech on the final day of the 19th Sarawak Legislative Assembly (DUN) Sitting on Wednesday. In his Sarawak Budget 2025 speech delivered last Monday, the Premier had outlined details of the RM1,200 cash allowance, initially targeted for students from low-income households with a per capita household income of RM1,500 or less. He said this financial aid reflects the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government's commitment to prioritising the welfare of Sarawak's youth. Meanwhile, when asked by the media after the conclusion of the 19th DUN Sarawak session, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari confirmed that the disbursement mechanism for the aid will be managed by Yayasan Sarawak.-UKASnews

Sarawak Considers Extending Duration Of Legislative Assembly Sitting

KUCHING: The Sarawak government is contemplating extending the duration of the Sarawak Legislative Assembly Sitting to allow more time for lawmakers to discuss key issues. Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg said the suggestion was brought forward by Machan Assemblyman Allan Siden Gramong, who highlighted the need for more in-depth deliberations on pressing matters. "Last year, we received a request for an additional allowance. This time, we are looking into the possibility of extending the session duration for Assemblymen. I will leave this matter to be reviewed by Sarawak Legislative Assembly Speaker, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar," he said. The Sarawak Premier made these remarks during his speech at the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Backbenchers’ Night held at a leading hotel on Wednesday. In addition, Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari, who is also GPS Chairman, commended the professionalism displayed by all Assembly members throughout the recent Legislative Assembly sitting. Despite the limited time, he noted that each member demonstrated exceptional time management skills. "We conducted serious and constructive sessions, unlike in other places where disruptions are common," he added.
