Para SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024: Conduct Athlete Classification In Respective States

JOHOR BAHRU: Any state participating in the Para SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024 must conduct the classification of their athletes who will compete for their respective states. Sarawak Minister for Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah said that the athlete classification must also be carried out thoroughly. According to her, this classification is crucial to avoid issues where athletes are not allowed to compete upon arrival in Sarawak. "If this happens, it would be a significant loss, especially for athletes who have trained throughout the year and even longer for this championship. "With the increasing flight costs today, it would be a loss if athletes are not allowed to compete upon arriving in Sarawak. "It will dampen the athletes' spirits as they are not allowed to compete upon arrival in Sarawak. This is what we emphasise in this Para SUKMA. "The classification must be done correctly and thoroughly at the state level so that when they arrive, they can participate in the sports events identified by their coaches," she said. She said this in a press conference in conjunction with the courtesy visit of the SUKMA and Para SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024 delegation to Johor Menteri Besar, Dato Onn Hafiz Ghazi at the Dato Ja’afar Muhammad Building, Johor Bahru on Wednesday. The delegation was led by Sarawak Minister for Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah. Also present were Sarawak Deputy State Secretary (Operation) who is also Chief Executive Officer of SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024 Datu Hii Chang Kee, Permanent Secretary to the Sarawak Ministry of Women, Early Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development, Datu Felicia Tan, and Permanent Secretary to the Sarawak Ministry of Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development, Morshidi Fredrick. Meanwhile, Dato Sri Fatimah said the Para SUKMA XXI Sarawak 2024 event will take place from September 20 to 28, featuring 10 sports and 334 events. A total of 13 states including the Federal Territories and Labuan will also participate this time. Responding to the requests of participating states, Dato Sri Fatimah said, all events will be held in Kuching to save on expenses borne by each team. She also expressed gratitude to the Johor government for participating in this Para SUKMA. For the record, Johor is the eighth stop for the SUKMA and Para SUKMA XXI Sarawak delegation after Penang, Perlis, Kedah, Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, and Pahang starting from April 22. The delegation will continue their courtesy visit tour to Melaka and Negeri Sembilan today. -UKASnews

Seeds Production Potential Gets Betong Closer To Food Hub Plan

SPAOH: The Betong Division’s plan to be a major food and food products producer in the state is leveraging on a perfect start and advantages with the operations of Green World Genetics (GWG) which had set up a station in the division, three years ago.   According to Sarawak Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas, the top seed company from Peninsular Malaysia carried out its core business of researching, developing and producing high quality tropical fruit and vegetable seeds on a 27.59-hectare plot at Simpang Debak.   “Among the vegetables, fruits and crops that they have chosen are cucumber, long bean, papaya, corn, and paddy. The company is also marketing these seeds worldwide.   “In Betong Division and notably in Bukit Saban, we see a lot of potential in this new industry of seeds production. The market for high quality seeds is also big, and such seeds are quite costly,” he said after presenting Minor Rural Project (MRP) grants totalling RM1.1 million to various organisations, schools, and village security and development committees (JKKK) here, on Wednesday.   Betong Member of Parliament, Dr Richard Rapu who joined him also gave away grants amounting to RM87,000.   Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said, GWG would act as an anchor company for seed supply besides providing training for the related farmers involved.   “We are planning to invite our stallholders to be its contract farmers. They will sell their seeds to the company who will then process and pack them properly. This is crucial for outside markets.      “Together with the Agriculture Department here, we will identify those interested, from our local farmers. We hope to start with an initial batch of 50 this year.   “Like I have said, we are not producing these veggies, fruits and others for consumption but to produce the seeds,” he added.   On whether farmers would be receptive to this concept, the Bukit Saban assemblyman said a number of them had visited the Simpang Debak station and were mesmerised by the developments there.   Some farmers here had started their own modern agriculture endeavours with quite promising results, he said.   He further explained that GWG, which is a Malaysian owned company, had done a lot of activities in the Peninsular.   " The management has indicated to us they want to expand further in the state. We are looking at Sesang in the division, in collaboration with the Agriculture Department,” Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah said. -UKASnews
