KUCHING: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data are now seen as key drivers in achieving Sarawak's vision outlined in its Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030.
Sarawak Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the combination of these two elements can assist the Sarawak government in identifying current needs when formulating future strategies.
Citing the role of AI and data in modernising the energy sector, he explained that both are being used to reshape the industry, revolutionising energy generation, distribution, and consumption.
“For example, AI enables smart grid management by monitoring and controlling the flow of electricity in real time.
“By integrating renewable energy sources, storage systems, and response to energy demand, AI helps in balancing supply and demand while maximising the use of renewable energy,” he said.
He said this while delivering his keynote address at the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak 2024 (IDECS 2024) at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Thursday.
Elaborating further, he said AI algorithms can analyse vast amounts of data from energy systems, including power grids and renewable energy sources, leading to more efficient use of energy and reduced carbon emissions.
Dato Sri Julaihi who is also the Minister responsible for IDECS 2024 added that beyond the energy sector, AI and data can be utilised to achieve the Sarawak government’s goal of becoming a net food exporter by 2030.
“By leveraging the latest digital technologies such as AI, Internet of Things (IoT), and data analytics, Sarawak can accelerate its transition to smart and precision agriculture.
“This shift will not only increase crop yields and productivity but also improve production efficiency and overall market access. These advancements are crucial as we work towards ensuring food security for Sarawak,” he further explained.
Also present at the event were Sarawak Deputy Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Datuk Liwan Lagang, Chairman of Sarawak Information Systems Sdn. Bhd. (SAINS), Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam, General Manager of the Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA), Dato Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng, and Permanent Secretary to the Sarawak Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication (MUT), Datu Jafri Lias. -UKASnews
