KUCHING: Tan Sri Datuk Amar (Dr) Hamid Bugo was appointed as Honorary Consul of New Zealand in Sarawak after Datuk Mohamad Amin Satem’s term concluded in 2009, marking a new chapter in the diplomatic relationship between Sarawak and New Zealand.
The appointment was announced by the Deputy High Commissioner of New Zealand to Malaysia, Dr Sharmila during the Matariki festival celebration held at the Sheraton Hotel Kuching on Monday, where guests gathered to honour the Maori New Year with cultural facts about the celebration.
In his speech, Tan Sri Hamid mentioned that he was honoured to be given a chance to be appointed to the position.
“It is not only an honour, but it is truly a privilege and an opportunity for me to do my best to give services to New Zealand and to the people of New Zealand,” he said.
He also highlighted the potential for collaborative growth and development between Sarawak and New Zealand, emphasising opportunities in various sectors which could lead to mutually beneficial advancements and strengthened bilateral relations.
“We need help, collaboration and assistance from others not only in terms of investment or financially, but in terms of technical skills and others.
“It is an opportune time and I promise that I will try my best to bring Sarawakians and New Zealand together, to harness the opportunities.
“I think the most important out of all of this is people. Whatever plans we have, without the right people to execute your plan, you are not going to succeed,” he added.
Also present during the event were Sarawak Deputy Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Datuk Sebastian Ting Chiew Yew, and other distinguished guests. -UKASnews
