KUCHING: The tides of excitement returned to Kuching Waterfront as the first day of the Sarawak Regatta 2025 commenced on Friday, drawing spectators and participants into one of the state’s most iconic heritage sporting festivals.
The opening programme featured intense competition in the Perahu Bidar 30 Paddlers (Men’s Open) category for the prestigious Borneo International Trophy, followed by the Perahu Bidar 15 Paddlers (Men’s Open) event, which saw participation from both local and international teams.
All eyes were fixed on the Perahu Bidar 30 Paddlers (Men’s Local) category, contending for the coveted Tuan Yang Terutama Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak Trophy, known fondly as the “Raja Sungai,” considered one of the highest honours in the competition’s history.
Adding to the excitement along the Sarangan A course were the Perahu Bidar 15 Paddlers (Men’s Local) for the Unity Trophy and the Perahu Bidar 25 Paddlers (Men’s Local) vying for the PETROS Trophy, further elevating the competitive spirit on the river.
Beyond a showcase of speed and stamina, Sarawak Regatta 2025 continues to stand as a representation of unity among Sarawakians of diverse backgrounds.
The century-old tradition remains one of the state’s strongest cultural symbols, attracting visitors while preserving the essence of community harmony.
