KUCHING: Sarawak’s role in the renewable energy and digital economy agenda is further strengthened through the development of the ‘Kota Petra Green Technology Park’ which is set to become one of the leading green technology centres in the region.

Minister for Utility and Telecommunication, Dato Sri Julaihi Narawi said the 3,000-acre green technology park will be led by Sarawak Digital Economy Corporation Berhad (SDEC) and will feature comprehensive digital integration incorporating a 300-megawatt large-scale solar power plant and a 600-megawatt-hour battery energy storage system.

“The energy storage system will power artificial intelligence (AI)-based data centre sites and high-tech industries, thus strengthening Sarawak’s role as a green industry base,” he said.

He said this when delivering a keynote address titled ‘Ethical AI and the Green Digital Economy: Sarawak’s Path to Regional Leadership in Utility and Telecommunication’ in conjunction with the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak 2025 (IDECS25) at the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK), here, on Thursday.

The Minister-In-Charge for IDECS25 added that the project located in Petra Jaya is currently showing positive developments and is poised to be among the first of its kind in the southern region of Sarawak.

Meanwhile, Dato Sri Julaihi also explained that the development will be combined with the ‘Sarawak Data Centre Park’ which will be powered entirely by renewable energy with Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) as the main power partner.

“The park will be built to Tier 4 international standards, which is the highest level in terms of efficiency and reliability of data infrastructure,” he added.

According to him, the demand for green, secure and ethically managed data centres is increasing across ASEAN, with Sarawak strategically positioned to meet this demand.

“Sarawak’s true value is not only in its capabilities, but also in its credibility which offers investors, developers and the government an ecosystem where sustainability and ethics go hand in hand,” he said.

Also present were SDEC Chairman, Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Morshidi Abdul Ghani, Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) General Manager, Dato Dr. Anderson Tiong Ing Heng and SDEC Chief Executive Officer, Dato Ir. Ts. Sudarnoto Osman. -UKASnews
