KUCHING: Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) is considered as the state’s leading centre of healthcare and medical excellence.
Sarawak Deputy Premier and Minister for Public Health, Housing and Local Government, Datuk Amar Professor Dr. Sim Kui Hian said SGH growing reputation in medical research, noting that it has been recognised as Malaysia’s top research hospital for three consecutive years with official certification from the Prime Minister’s Department.
“SGH is the top research hospital in Malaysia for the past three years. It was also the first hospital in Asia Pacific chosen to conduct a ‘first in human’ clinical trial for solid cancer under Roche. This shows Sarawak’s capability in medical innovation,” he said.
He said the hospital’s achievements are made possible through the commitment of its staff and the unity of Sarawakians who take pride in the institution’s legacy.
“This is not just a hospital for the sick. It is our hospital, our pride and our community,” he added.
Datuk Amar Dr. Sim also highlighted SGH is not only the largest hospital in Sarawak but also a source of pride for the community, representing the spirit of service, dedication and compassion that define the state’s healthcare system.
He described SGH as “the number one hospital in Sarawak,” supported by a large workforce that continues to serve with excellence.
“This hospital has 5,000 people working here and at least 10,000 people coming every day. That is why I said it is the number one hospital,” he said when officiating the Sarawak General Hospital Open Day 2025 at the CRC Auditorium on Saturday.
He said SGH provides care in 80 medical specialities, of which 55 are sub specialities, reflecting its role as the only hospital in Sarawak offering such comprehensive tertiary services.
“We have 80 specialities and most of them are sub specialities. That shows how important this hospital is,” he said.
Datuk Amar Dr. Sim added that the hospital records 62,000 admissions, 25,000 operations and 10,000 births annually, with 360,000 outpatient visits every year.
“Every year, 62,000 people are admitted, 25,000 operations are done and about 10,000 babies are born here.
“We also see around 360,000 outpatients each year, which shows how crucial this hospital is to the people of Kuching and Sarawak,” he said.
He also mentioned that half of Kuching’s population rely on SGH for treatment, including patients from other divisions, which is why the ART line was planned to extend to the location.
