Green Card For Sarawak Delta Geopark As A UNESCO Global Geopark

TEMUCO: Sarawak celebrates a historic milestone as the Sarawak Delta Geopark has been officially accepted as a UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGp).

This announcement was received by the Sarawak delegation attending the 11th International Conference on UNESCO Global Geoparks in Temuco, Chile.

This makes Sarawak Delta the first UNESCO Global Geopark in Sarawak, placing the State on the world map for its rich natural heritage, cultural diversity, and commitment to sustainable development.

The Geopark showcases Sarawak’s unique deltaic landscapes, biodiversity, culture and communities, reflecting the balance between people and nature.

The Director of Forests Sarawak, Datu Hamden Mohammad, who is leading the seven-member delegation, expressed deep gratitude to the Sarawak Premier, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, for his strong support and leadership.

He also conveyed heartfelt thanks to the Chairman of Sarawak Delta Geopark Steering Committee, Datuk Len Talif Salleh, for his tireless efforts and continuous support in ensuring Sarawak achieved this global recognition.

The official endorsement as a Global Geopark will be done by the UNESCO’s Executive Board sometime in May 2026.

“This recognition is a proud achievement for Sarawak and Malaysia, and a tribute to the people of Sarawak. It reaffirms our commitment to conservation, education, and sustainable development,” said Datu Hamden.

The delegation which consists of officers from Ministry Natural Resources and Development, Forest Department Sarawak, Sarawak Forestry Corporation and Economic Planning Unit, Sarawak continues to engage in the Conference, strengthening Sarawak’s global partnerships under UNESCO’s vision. - UKASnews
