LIMBANG: The Sarawak-Sabah Link Road (SSLR) Phase 2, approved by the Federal Government in 2023 at a total cost of RM7.15 billion, has become one of the most significant mega projects aimed at narrowing the development gap in East Malaysia.

Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi said the 335-kilometre project covers key areas including Miri, Limbang, Lawas and Ba’kelalan, and is being carried out in packages to ensure both construction quality and timely completion.

“The government is committed to ensuring balanced development for all Malaysians, whether in urban centres, rural areas, or the interior,” he said.

He made the remarks at the launch of SSLR Phase 2 here on Thursday, officiated by Prime Minister Dato' Seri Anwar Ibrahim and attended by Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg.

The project continues from SSLR Phase 1 in Lawas, which began in 2021 and had achieved 57.6 per cent progress as of July last year.

Once completed, SSLR2 will provide residents with an alternative route between Sarawak and Sabah without having to rely on the existing international road.

“Rural communities will finally enjoy safer and more comfortable journeys, after depending for so long on logging roads as their main routes,” he added.

Beyond improving mobility, Datuk Seri Alexander said SSLR2 is expected to unlock greater economic opportunities, particularly in agro-based industries and eco-tourism, while boosting social inclusion and strengthening national unity.

He emphasised that the project reflects the commitment of both the Federal and Sarawak Governments in enhancing transport connectivity, which forms the backbone of economic and social development.

“This road will not only ease travel for the people, but also attract investments, drive rural development, and foster integration and unity among our diverse communities,” he said.

He also expressed confidence that SSLR2 will support sustainable economic growth and reinforce East Malaysia’s position as a dynamic and progressive regional hub. -UKASnews
