SARIKEI: The implementation of various high-impact projects has transformed the Sarikei Division into one of Sarawak’s increasingly progressive regions in terms of development and economy.

Citing the construction of the Batang Rajang Bridge as an example, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability, Dato’ Sri Huang Tiong Sii said the significant infrastructure not only enhances connectivity among areas along Sungai Rajang, but also brings positive socio-economic benefits to Sarawakians, particularly the residents of the Sarikei Parliamentary constituency.

According to the Sarikei Member of Parliament (MP), the 1.4-kilometre bridge, built at a cost of RM321 million, stands as a testament to the Sarawak Government’s commitment in uplifting rural areas.

“This project is deeply meaningful to me personally, as it has been one of my main struggles since being entrusted with the responsibility as the Sarikei MP.

“The Batang Rajang Bridge is now a symbol of the State Government’s determination under the leadership of the Sarawak Premier to propel the state towards a more advanced, inclusive and prosperous future,” he said.

He said this during an exclusive interview with the Sarawak Public Communication Unit (UKAS) in conjunction with the 2025 Sarawak-Level National Day celebration, held at his service centre recently.

In this regard, he expressed his gratitude to the Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri (Dr) Abang Abdul Rahman Zohari Tun Datuk Abang Openg, and Deputy Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas for realising the long-awaited dream of the locals to enjoy this crucial infrastructure.

For the record, the Batang Rajang Bridge, officiated on 17 May 2025, has since been named the Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang bin Tuanku Othman Bridge.

Dato’ Sri Huang further shared that the government will also implement several major development projects comprising infrastructure, public amenities, and local economic enhancement such as upgrading road networks in both urban and rural areas.

This includes the upgrading of village and longhouse roads, as well as the construction of improved drainage systems to mitigate flood risks, he added.

Additionally, the Repok Assemblyman said the Sarikei Waterfront Development Project, to be carried out in phases under the Rajang Delta Development Agency (RADDA), will become a new tourism attraction and a community hub in Sarikei.

“All these projects are for the well-being and benefit of the people of Sarikei, as our Premier’s policy strongly emphasises rural development.

“He wants to see the development gap between urban and rural areas narrowed so that all Sarawakians can enjoy shared prosperity as outlined in the Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030,” he said.

In this regard, Dato’ Sri Huang called on Sarawakians to continue supporting the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) Government under the leadership of Datuk Patinggi Abang Zohari to ensure political stability so that development plans in Sarawak, especially in Sarikei, can be carried through for the benefit of all.

“With the Premier’s far-sighted vision and holistic planning, I am confident that Sarikei will be transformed from a remote district into one of the key economic hubs in central Sarawak, contributing significantly to the state’s development,” he added.

Meanwhile, he also urged all Sarawakians, particularly those in Sarikei, to celebrate National Day with a spirit of independence and patriotism.

He stressed that in addition to Sarawak Day and Malaysia Day, National Day remains important as a platform to further strengthen unity among the diverse communities of this nation, in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI. -UKASnews
