KUCHING: The Jalan Matang widening project has reached 62.2 per cent progress with a slight delay of 3.58 per cent, but is still expected to be completed ahead of the original schedule which is by August next year.

According to Deputy Minister for Infrastructure and Port Development, Datuk Ir. Aidel Lariwoo, the delay was mainly due to large-scale utility relocation works within the project area.

“This delay is primarily caused by extensive utility relocation works along this stretch such as telecommunications and water supply. These relocations are being carried out on a permanent basis to designated locations as part of a long-term strategy.

“The process takes time due to the need for coordination with the respective utility service providers, but overall, the project is progressing smoothly with some areas already completed and only awaiting the final road layer.

“All things considered, we remain optimistic that this project will be completed ahead of schedule, by August next year,” he said when met by reporters during a site visit to the Jalan Matang project, here on Friday.

Meanwhile, Chief Political Secretary to the Sarawak Premier, Dato Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman expressed hope that the project could be completed as soon as possible, ideally by January or February next year, as Jalan Matang is used daily by thousands of motorists.

The Tupong Assemblyman also proposed the construction of a new road from the Malihah Junction directly to FAC as an alternative route.

“I would like to appeal to the Sarawak Government, particularly Deputy Premier, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas as well as Datuk Ir. Aidel to consider this proposal.

“In addition, I suggest constructing a road from Malihah cutting through to Paroh and then to Sungai Maong, to ease traffic flow along Jalan Matang and provide alternative routes for locals.

“At the very least, road users will have several options to access the market, either via the shortcut to FAC, or from the Malihah Junction through to Paroh. However, the route to Paroh may require the construction of a new bridge, which could involve higher costs,” he said. -UKASnews
